Was Mozart variiert – Klaviersonate A-dur KV 331, und Klarinettenquintett A-dur KV581

Six years separate two major works by Mozart, both share the tonality A major and both include a variation movement. But the expectations of genre and the placement of the variations (in the beginning of the piano sonata and in the end of the clarinet quintet) show quite different strategies of variation. The piano sonata KV 331 starts in a quiet solitary piano room and opens to an open stage, to turkish open air music. The clarinet quintet is already on stage and questions musical time and space in a fundamental way.
