Sound waves are generated by a sound source and create vibrations in the surrounding medium. Even frequencies that are inaudible to humans have an effect on surrounding organisms. We want to create musical communication from plants to humans and strengthen our awareness of our natural environment through emphatic listening. In our musical compositions, the biorhythms of plant species are used as the basis for piano music. In our work, we are inspired by the harmony of nature in Biesenthal and create a melody that is musically close to the ecosystem of the forest.
COMPOSITION
The biorhythms of plants are measured on the basis of electrical conductivity and interpreted as electrical notes (MIDI). We perceive this raw data musically as a unique plant improvisation at a specific time. Information for sound and rhythm in our composition comes exclusively from the plant. In the musical performance we hear 7 different plant species and move with the piano melodies through the silver grass, an orchid, a beech, a St John’s wort, a berry, an elm and a water lily. In our composition, the melodies flow metaphorically like the water of the Biesenthal basin through the Finow towards the Wehrmühle exhibition venue.
SLOW LISTENING
We want to reflect the harmonies of nature in the naturally harmonious medium of music through a unique listening experience. With sufficient time between the sounds from the inner life of the plants, we want to intensify the experience. Emphatic listening is at the centre of this project and offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the plant ecosystem through a musical composition enriched with ambient sounds from the exhibition space and its surroundings. Our intention is to emphasise the protection of the site and draw attention to the extinction of plant species.
The composition FERMATA NO.2 was realised in May 2024 and exhibited during ‘Aura’s Present Decay’ at Art Biesenthal.
