Robert Mitchell: Texting in Earlier 15th Century Sacred Polyphony
We are pleased to present this important study of text underlay in our Internet Academy!
This study examines problems frequently found in musical sources such as the later Trent manuscripts, where musical text is often carelessly copied, and where some degree of editing seems to be necessary for presenting this music properly in a modern edition. For at least some of this repertory, texting guidelines may be drawn up rather than firm rules. Several examples are given which are probably easy for beginners to work through and understand. Thorough coverage is also given for developments in sacred music in the period 1400-1430, and there is also coverage of the copying styles used at that time such as the writing of musical text before music notation.
